Jury returns mixed verdict in trial of Nashua man charged with sexually assaulting underage girl
Cleve Wilmot, 52, last known address, 23 Congress St., Apt. 10, Nashua
NASHUA — Jurors on Friday returned five not-guilty and three guilty verdicts in the Superior Court trial of Cleve Wilmot, the now 52-year-old man who was accused of sexually assaulting a girl he knows over the course of four years.
Wilmot, whose most recent address is 23 Congress St., Apt. 10, will now await a sentencing hearing on the three charges on which the jury convicted him. According to his case summary, Wilmot is being held on preventive detention pending the sentencing hearing, a date for which isn’t listed in the summary.
He was found guilty on two counts of aggravated felonious sexual assault — pattern sexual assault, and one count of AFSA — without penetration (victim under age 13).
The “pattern sexual assault” classification alleges Wilmot sexually assaulted the girl on more than one occasion over a period of two months or more, and within a period of five years.
In this case, the charges accuse Wilmot of committing various acts of sexual assault on at least six occasions between Jan. 1, 2013 and Dec. 1, 2018, when the alleged victim was between 9 and 14 years old, according to indictments and charging documents.
Meanwhile, the jury acquitted Wilmot on four counts of AFSA — pattern sexual assault, and one count of felonious sexual assault — penetration (victim age 13-15).
One additional AFSA — pattern sexual assault charge was dismissed by prosecutors before the start of trial.
Police arrested Wilmot the afternoon of Dec. 14, 2018, just hours after the victim, then a high school freshman, went to a school resource officer with allegations that Wilmot had been having sex with her since she was in the fifth grade.
After interviewing the girl that morning, detectives with the department’s Special Investigations Division issued a warrant for his arrest, on which they took him into custody, according to police reports filed at the time.
Wilmot, in a post-arrest interview with detectives, repeatedly denied having sex with the girl, at one point allegedly “telling the detectives they are lying” before announcing he was finished talking, according to the reports.
