MANCHESTER — A pair of downtown area shootings a short distance away from each other early Sunday morning remain under investigation by police detectives, who said Monday they have made an arrest in one of the incidents.

Taken into custody while allegedly trying to flee the scene of the second shooting, at 178 Cedar St., was Angel Janiel Rivera Calderon, 23, whose address or town of residence wasn’t provided by police.

Police said officers working at the scene of the first shooting, which took place at 135 Chestnut St., suddenly heard “active gunfire” coming from the area of the Cedar Street address, then were able to see a vehicle leaving the area and attempted to pull it over.

The driver allegedly refused to stop, leading officers on a brief pursuit, during which he allegedly discarded a firearm.

Once the driver did stop, police identified him as Calderon, and charged him with disobeying a police officer and operating with a suspended license.

Police said the firearm he allegedly discarded was eventually located.

As a result of detectives’ further investigation into the incident, probable cause was established to charge Calderon with seven counts of reckless conduct and one count of falsifying physical evidence, all felonies, for allegedly firing a handgun into an occupied building and discarding a firearm during the pursuit, police said.

Calderon was booked on the charges and jailed pending a Superior Court arraignment.

“This quick arrest is a testament to the hard work that Manchester police officers and detectives do each and every day,” police Chief Allen Aldenberg said. “This case also highlights the high importance this agency places on reducing violent crime in the city.”

As for the Chestnut Street shooting, the alleged victim, who wasn’t identified by police, was shot multiple times, and remains hospitalized in serious, but stable, condition, police said.
