MANCHESTER — A memorial gathering is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Manchester for Christopher M. Brooks, the 20-year U.S. Army reservist and former police officer who died of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash last weekend in Bedford.

Brooks, 47, a resident of Londonderry, was found deceased in the wreckage of his pickup truck, which police said had drifted off of I-293 south near the off-ramp to Route 101 west in Bedford, traveled down an embankment and crashed into a tree.

Brooks was alone in the vehicle.

Sunday’s gathering will take place from 2-4 p.m. at the Phaneuf Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, with a memorial celebration of life service to follow at 4 p.m.

An internment service, with full military honors, will take place Monday at 10 a.m. at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen.

While an active member of the Vermont National Guard, Brooks served as a police sergeant in Bellows Falls, Vermont, for several years.

According to his obituary, Brooks was in charge of security at the Afghanistan Airport in Kabul during his several tours of duty. He attained the rank of Army major, and earned numerous awards and commendations during his career, including the Bronze Star, the Military Order of St. Christopher, and the NATO Meritorious Service Medal.

He is survived by his parents, John and Kathleen Brooks of Londonderry; a son, Michael Brooks and a daughter, Isabella Brooks, both of Rindge; a sister, two nieces and uncles, aunts and cousins.
