House advances 1 juvenile offender bill, kills 2nd

By The Associated Press - | Jan 9, 2022

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire House has voted to shorten the list of crimes that would send children to locked facilities but it drew the line at prohibiting life sentences for minors.

The House voted Thursday to remove simple assault and non-violent offenses from those that can be used to hold minors in institutional settings. The state has been moving in that direction in recent years, and only about a dozen children are currently being held at the Sununu Youth Services Center in Manchester.

That bill now goes to the Senate. But the House killed another measure that would have banned a sentence of life imprisonment without parole for juveniles convicted of homicide. About two dozen other states already have passed similar laws.
