NASHUA — Officials are investigating witness reports that “intense solar glare” may have been a factor in back-to-back crashes that occurred on Northeastern Boulevard shortly after sunrise Saturday.

The identities of the people involved in the crashes weren’t immediately released by police, but at least four of them sustained significant injuries.

The injuries to three of those people sustained injuries serious enough to prompt medical personnel to contact local hospitals and request trauma alerts.

Firefighters, police and AMR ambulances were initially dispatched to a crash involving a car and a utility pole near the corner of Northeastern Boulevard and Murphy Drive.

Two or three people who saw the crash stopped to assist the driver, and while they were standing next to his car, another vehicle — whose driver may have been affected by the solar glare — struck the people as well as the vehicle, leaving the people with significant injuries and causing additional damage to the vehicle.

The number of injured people prompted command personnel to request mutual aid ambulances from both Hudson and Pelham to assist the AMR ambulances.

Two of the three people standing outside the car involved in the first crash appeared to be the most seriously injured.

The driver of the second vehicle did not require transport to a hospital.

Updates on the injured people’s condition weren’t immediately available.
