Negligent homicide indictment handed up in 2019 drowning death of 1-year-old

Zachary Conway, 25, of Manchester

MANCHESTER — Two years after a 1-year-old child drowned in a motel bathtub while in his care, 25-year-old Zachary Conway has been indicted on a charge of negligent homicide, police said Monday.

Conway, who police said is currently in custody in another state on unrelated charges, was taking care of the child in a room at the EconoLodge, 75 West Hancock St., the evening of Oct. 7, 2019.

At some point the child was found unresponsive in the bathtub, and was rushed to a local hospital but did not regain consciousness, police said.

Officials subsequently ruled that the cause of the child’s death was drowning.

Police didn’t say whether the child was related to Conway, and if so, how they were related. They also didn’t identify the unrelated charges on which Conway is being held, nor did they say where he is being held.

The case was a difficult one for the officers and investigators involved, police Chief Allen Aldenberg said.

“This incident was very difficult for the Manchester officers who first responded that day, as well as everyone involved in the case,” Aldenberg said.

“I want to recognize the time and unrelenting dedication put forth by the officers and detectives who have worked tirelessly to get justice for this young victim,” he added.
