NASHUA — The purpose of the significant police presence on Vagge Drive that many residents of the area noticed Friday afternoon was to locate and take into custody a Nashua man wanted in connection with a stabbing death in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Police successfully apprehended Edgardo Carabello, 50, on the warrant Lawrence police had issued for his arrest following the stabbing death Friday morning of a 37-year-old Lawrence resident, who was identified by a spokeswoman for Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett as Eddy Novo, according to the Lawrence Eagle Tribune newspaper.

Carabello, who about a decade ago was charged in Nashua with two counts each of first-degree assault and second-degree assault — all of which were eventually nol prossed, or dismissed — was jailed following Friday’s arrest, pending arraignment on a fugitive charge that will presumably take place Monday in Hillsborough County Superior Court South.

When Carabello is returned to Massachusetts to face the murder charge will be determined if, and when, he waives extradition.

According to a statement issued by Blodgett spokeswoman Carrie Kimball, police and medical personnel were called to the area of 205 Broadway at about 9:45 Friday morning for a report of an assault in progress.

Novo was rushed to Lawrence General Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased, according to the statement.

The Nashua charges that were later dropped against Carabello stem from his arrest in March 2010 on allegations he beat another man with a wooden landscaping stake during a fight in an Ash Street apartment.

One of the first-degree charges was dismissed about three months into the case, while the other three were dismissed a year and a half later, in November 2011.
