KINGSTON — Sgt. Donna Briggs, a retired member of the Hudson Police Department who served in various capacities including the department’s DARE officer and school resource officer, has died of injuries sustained when the bicycle she was riding was struck by a car on Tuesday.

State and local police said Briggs, 59, was riding along Route 125 when, their investigation has determined, a dark-colored sedan struck her bicycle from behind, sending Briggs and the bike off the shoulder of the road and down an embankment.

The driver of the sedan fled the scene, police said.

It appears Briggs was riding with a group of bikers when she was struck around 11:30 a.m., but it wasn’t until several hours later that someone called police, apparently after realizing she hadn’t rejoined the group.

Police began searching for Briggs around 8:30 p.m., and located her and the bicycle a short time later.

More information will be reported when it becomes available.
