LIVERMORE — An unidentified hiker collapsed about four miles from the trailhead to Signal Ridge Trail on Saturday, and despite the life-saving efforts of nearby hikers and emergency personnel, he or she couldn’t be revived, officials said.

The hiker’s name, gender and place of residence hadn’t been released as of Sunday, as officials were in the process of locating and notifying family members.

State Fish and Game officers were notified around noontime Saturday by 911 personnel of an unconscious hiker who wasn’t breathing.

The location was given as the Signal Ridge Trail, roughly four miles from the trailhead parking area on Sawyer Brook Road in Crawford Notch.

Responding along with Fish and Game officers were Bartlett firefighters, Bartlett-Jackson ambulance personnel, and representatives of the U.S. Forest Service, Lakes Region Search and Rescue and SOLO — Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities, a wilderness, travel medicine and search and rescue training school based in Conway.

Nearby hikers had initiated CPR, but it was later terminated and the hiker was pronounced deceased by EMS personnel.

Due to the remote location of the deceased hiker, and the steep, rough terrain of the White Mountain National Forest and the distance to the nearest accessible road, it took several hours for crews to bring the hiker to the trailhead parking lot.
