July 4 activities, fireworks set in Greater Nashua

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Writer | Jul 3, 2021

The lack of Fourth of July celebrations last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic has made this year’s resumption of activities and fireworks displays that much sweeter for Grreater Nashuans and America in general.

In Nashua, Mayor Jim Donchess announced the return of a city fireworks display, which will take place at historic Holman Stadium Sunday evening starting around 9.

The doors to the stadium open at 5 p.m. Although the kids’ field day will not take place this year, the concession stand will be open and food trucks will be on hand as well.

Another highlight of the evening will be the induction of the Holman Stadium Sports Legends Hall of Fame Class of 2021.

The program will take place at 8 p.m. The four legends to be inducted include star 1940s running back Eddie Dobrowolski, and football and track stars Al Briggs, Duane Briggs and Mel Briggs.

Also to celebrate the return of fireworks, city officials and leaders of the Nashua Children’s Home and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Nashua have arranged for 20-25 kids from each organization to watch the fireworks display from the skybox suites, which Donchess said will “be a unique experience” for the kids “to be able to see the fireworks at such a close proximity.

In Amherst, residents are encouraged to decorate their mailboxes, houses or yards in an Independence Day theme. Anyone who would like to share their decorations with others can send their address to amherstnh4th@mail.com.

A “reverse parade” will take place Sunday morning, according to the town website. The format calls for parade participants to stand in stationary locations along the Souhegan High School loop, and have parade viewers drive slowly through the loop to wave to participants.

The parade will run from 9-10 a.m. Sunday.

In Merrimack, meanwhile, the celebration begins Friday with a 7 p.m. concert at Abbie Griffin Park, and continues on Sunday.

This is a special year for Merrimack, which is also observing the 275th anniversary of its founding.

The annual Sparkler 5K will start at 8 a.m. Sunday, with the annual Fourth of July Parade stepping off at 1 p.m.

Leading up to the fireworks display, which will get underway at 9 p.m. Sunday at the high school field, DJ Darren Roy will be playing from 7:30-9 p.m.

Milford’s Independence Day celebration is scheduled for Friday, with Rob Oxford playing live music at Keyes Memorial Park starting at 8 p.m. and leading up to the fireworks display.
