NASHUA – It’s “Spring Fling” time at the Nashua Senior Activity Center, 70 Temple St., as the organization encourages its members – and non-members, too – to emerge from winter and get out of the house for a series of fun classes and activities in the month of May.

Senior center activities director Cathy Barrett said the idea is to offer classes for folks who might prefer to sample a class (for free!) and those folks are welcome to invite their friends to participate as well. Anyone 50 or older is invited to attend whether they’re members at the senior center or not. Pre-registration is required.

“Some of these classes were outdoor last year as some of the instructors didn’t want to come in,” she explained. “Some instructors are just coming back after COVID and we have some that stuck with us through the pandemic.”

Some classes will be offered at Greeley Park, the Hudson American Legion or at the Senior Activity Center itself. Barrett said the classes are designed for all members of the community 50 years of age and older.

“For any evening programs, I can open those up to those who are younger than 50,” she said. “We encourage people who attend a class to bring their friends just to share their experience.”

If people decide that a certain class is for them, they can sign up at the front desk at the center or call 603-889-6155. Classes began on May 17.

Barrett said that they’re taking names and phone numbers of people who are interested.

“Even if they’re a non-member, they still have to call to pre-register,” she explained. “Because we are limiting numbers of participants, especially for those programs that are indoors.”

Local health regulations stipulate that people must wear a mask inside a building, and once they’re settled and doing their exercising, they may remove it. Masks must be worn when exiting class and the building and there is no lingering before or after classes.

“Some of our groups, such as Tai Chi seniors, still wear their masks,” Barrett said. “It’s not mandatory that they wear them but some people feel more comfortable that way.”

Most seniors have been fully vaccinated.

For Greeley Park classes in case of rain, the classes will take place indoors at the senior center. At the park, attendees taking a class there are instructed to meet in front of the fountain.

“I leave it up to each individual instructor as to where they prefer to hold class at Greeley Park,” Barrett said. “Most find the space behind the restroom building, because there is shade and it is mostly flat.”

People are encouraged to social distance outdoors and may choose not to wear a mask when outside.

As an incentive, door prize raffle tickets will be given to an attendee for every session for which they participate. One door prize ticket equals one raffle entry.

“People have ways of increasing their chances of winning,” Barrett said. ”

For every guest that a person brings, they receive three additional tickets (per guest). For every staff member a person gets to participate in a class, that person will receive five additional tickets.”

For every board member a person gets to participate, they will receive 10 additional tickets and all new members who sign up between May 17 – 31, they’ll receive ten additional tickets.

Door prizes include memberships as well as prizes from Bill Cahill’s Supersubs, Chunky’s Cinema, The Lobster Boat, T-Bones and more.

Door prizes will be drawn on June 1.

Classes in May include “Moving to Music,” “Beginner’s Tap,” “Tai Chi,” “Cultivate Your Positive Energy,” and Aerobics,” on Monday, May 17.

Tuesday, May 18 is “Veteran’s Mat Yoga,” for veterans, first responders and spouses only.
