Greater Nashua participates in National Drug Take-Back Day on April 24th

By Staff | Apr 21, 2021

NASHUA – On April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., communities nationwide will participate in the Drug Enforcement Agency’s (DEA) 20th Annual National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

This event provides the public an opportunity to prevent substance misuse and theft by eliminating expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs from our community. As a part of this national initiative, individuals can bring pills for disposal to any participating sites. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches.

“We can all do our part to keep children and teens from accessing medications that are not prescribed to them. Turning in unused prescription medications eliminates the risk of medications falling into the wrong hands,” said City of Nashua Mayor, Jim Donchess.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to misuse. Rates of prescription drug misuse in the United States are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of misused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines, such as flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, both pose potential safety and health hazards.
