DERRY – Derry Fire responded to a reported brush fire on Walnut Hill Road Wednesday at about 2:30 p.m. While en route, the battalion chief could see smoke in the sky from the fire station, located several miles away.

When firefighters arrived, they had about 1-acre of woods on fire, and a barn fully engulfed. The battalion chief immediately called for a working fire, and then requested the area tankers assigned to the “tanker task force.” The fire was located about a half mile from the closest hydrant, so water supply was provided by the tankers.

Fire crews extinguished the barn fire, while other crews worked to contain the brush fire from spreading further in the dry conditions. Foam was added to the water supply for better saturation of the woods and brush that was smoldering.

The fire was brought under control in about an hour. The fire is under investigation by Derry Fire investigators. Initial reports are no civilians or firefighters were injured.
