Police bomb experts blow up suspicious device at Central High
MANCHESTER – The discovery of a suspicious device described as “taped up with wires sticking out” drew a large contingent of law enforcement officials to Central High School early Monday afternoon, a police spokeswoman said.
Among the responding officers were members of the State Police Bomb Disposal Unit, who inspected the object then opted to utilize equipment designed to “disrupt” it, meaning rendering it inert and safe to dispose.
The process caused a loud bang, the spokeswoman, Heather Hamel, said in a statement. Once the device was disrupted, the bomb technicians were able to examine it more closely, and determined that it was “a hoax device,” Hamel said.
Nevertheless, the discovery of the device, which was found on the Beech Street side of Central High, prompted police to evacuate the school and nearby buildings, as well as temporarily close several streets in the area, Hamel said.
She said Manchester and state police, along with School District personnel, are collaborating on the investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and to identify the suspect or suspects involved.
Police ask anyone who may have any information on the incident to contact the department at 668-8711, or leave an anonymous tip on its Crime Line at 624-4040.
