Local woman sustains serious, but not life-threatening, injuries in Friday night attack; suspect jailed

Stephen Balsam, age 52, of Nashua
NASHUA – Detectives investigating a residential break-in and assault that landed the alleged victim in the hospital have arrested Nashua resident Stephen Balsam in connection with the incident, police said.
Balsam, 52, last known address of 3 Broadview Ave., was ordered held on preventive detention following his arrest and subsequent booking Friday night on one count each of second degree assault – domestic violence, a Class B felony; and criminal trespass and domestic violence – obstructing the report of a crime or injury, both Class A misdemeanors.
Balsam is scheduled to be arraigned today in Hillsborough County Superior Court South.
Police said Balsam was taken into custody around 9:30 p.m. Friday, shortly after patrol officers responded to an unspecified address in Nashua to take a report of “an incident involving Balsam and an adult female,” police said.
The alleged victim, who knows Balsam, told police he allegedly entered her residence and assaulted her.
She was taken to a local hospital for treatment of what police described as serious, but not life-threatening injuries.
Balsam, according to archived news and police reports, has a criminal record that includes an arrest four years ago this month on charges accusing him of breaking into a maintenance building at Sky Meadow Country Club several weeks earlier and stealing various items.
Balsam, who had previously worked at Sky Meadow, would eventually plead guilty to one count of burglary and two counts of theft by deception as part of a plea deal with prosecutors.
He was sentenced in November 2018 to 1-4 years in State Prison, with orders to pay restitution of roughly $2,000, agree to undergo a mental health assessment, take part in counseling and have no contact with Sky Meadow.
Regarding Friday’s arrest, police ask anyone who may have any further information on the incident to contact the department’s Crime Line at 589-1665.
