WINDHAM – State police continue to investigate the circumstances of an early morning crash on I-93 that claimed the lives of two Massachusetts women.

Lawrence, Massachusetts residents Lesley Martinez Velazquez, 23, and Sasha Peralta, 31, were both ejected from the 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee when, according to police, it veered across the highway, crashed through a guardrail and tumbled an estimated 100 yards down an embankment before coming to rest in a gully.

State troopers were notified of the crash just before 5 a.m. by callers who reported it had occurred in the southbound lane at mile marker 6.

Troopers, firefighters and ambulance personnel made their way down the embankment, and upon reaching the wreckage of the vehicle determined that the two women had sustained fatal injuries.

While the crash remains under investigation, police said it appears that speed and alcohol were factors.

Two lanes of I-93 were shut down for a lengthy period of time as troopers conducted their on-scene investigation.
