One teenage girl hospitalized, another escapes injury in UTV rollover in New Ipswich

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Jan 12, 2021

NEW IPSWICH – State Fish and Game officials said conservation officers continue to investigate the rollover crash Sunday of a utility-terrain vehicle, which they said occurred when the operator, a 14-year-old girl, was “doing donuts” in the snow on the property of an Appleton Road residence.

While the operator escaped injury, her passenger, a 16-year-old girl, suffered a leg injury, for which she was treated on the scene by Souhegan Valley Ambulance Service personnel then transported to a Manchester hospital for further evaluation and treatment, according to Conservation Officer Thomas Houghton.

He said that although the investigation is continuing, officials believe operator inexperience and excessive speed are the primary contributors to the crash.

Houghton also noted that neither of the girls was wearing a helmet or eye protection at the time of the crash, nor were they wearing the seatbelts installed in the vehicle.

Houghton issued a reminder that OHRV and snowmobile operators under age 18 are required by state law to wear helmets and eye protection at all times.

A utility-terrain vehicle (UTV) is a type of 4-wheel-drive recreational off-highway vehicle that can accommodate anywhere from two up to six people, and is typically larger than an all-terrain vehicle (ATV).

Smaller ones are usually used for recreational purposes, while the largest ones can also be used to transport groups of people short distances.

The incident, which Houghton said occurred at a private residence on Appleton Road, the exact address of which wasn’t provided, was reported to police, fire, rescue and ambulance personnel around noontime Sunday.

Fish and Game conservation officers responded along with New Ipswich police and firefighters, Peterborough fire and rescue personnel, and members of the Souhegan Valley Ambulance Service.
