Bedford resident facing charges in connection with Merrimack hit-and-run

George Zarella, age 50, of 7 Cabot Lane, Bedford

MERRIMACK – Witnesses who provided arriving police officers with information on the vehicle they reported seeing crash into two parked vehicles then allegedly drive off led to the prompt arrest of the driver, police said.

George Zarella, 50, of 7 Cabot Lane, Bedford, would end up being charged with two counts of conduct after an accident – one count for each vehicle he allegedly crashed into – along with one count each of operating under the influence of liquor and operating after suspension, according to police.

It wasn’t long after the witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a white Land Rover SUV to police that an officer cruising in the area spotted a vehicle matching that description.

Upon noticing the vehicle had front-end damage, the officer pulled it over, and in speaking with the operator identified him as Zarella, police said.

They said Zarella, who allegedly “showed signs of alcohol impairment,” agreed to perform “voluntary field sobriety tests,” the outcome of which led officers to conclude Zarella was allegedly “impaired by the consumption of alcohol,” police said.

The officers took him into custody and transported him to police headquarters for booking.

Police in the meantime ran a records check, which, they said, showed that Zarella’s license was recently suspended “due to a previous OUIL arrest.”

Following the booking process, Zarella was released on personal recognizance bail pending arraignment, which police said is scheduled for Jan. 5 in Merrimack district court.
