LONDONDERRY – An elderly man who admitted to falling for the phone scam in which a caller contacts potential victims, tells them their grandchild is in jail and needs $12,000 in bail money, appears to have narrowly escaped a confrontation with a man police say showed up at the elderly man’s house to collect the funds.

The alleged victim, whom police didn’t identify, called police early Friday afternoon, telling them he’d received such a call, but he never sent any money.

The alleged scammer then told him that someone would “come to his residence” to pick up the money, according to police.

When the alleged victim told police that a man had pulled up to his residence, and that he believed the man was there to collect the money, officers were dispatched to the alleged victim’s house.

Police said that upon arrival, officers spotted a man approaching the house, and after speaking with him took him into custody.

He was identified as Elvis Guzman, 43, of Paterson, New Jersey, police said. Officers transported Guzman to police headquarters for booking on the charges, which include one count each of conspiracy to commit theft by deception, and attempted theft by deception, both of which are Class A felonies.

Guzman was held without bail pending arraignment, which police said was scheduled for Monday in Rockingham County Superior Court.
