Update: Reported Hollis sign-stealing case closed

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Oct 29, 2020

HOLLIS – Police Chief Joe Hoebeke said Thursday that the resident who recently reported the theft of political campaign signs from his yard has been a victim in the past, but the person depicted in the security video images he gave to police following what he thought was another theft episode on Oct. 12 was not a suspect.

Instead, the person seen in the video turned out to be the resident’s granddaughter, who was merely walking through his yard.

Hoebeke said the resident didn’t realize at first that the images, which are in black and white and not very clear, showed his granddaughter.

But after studying the images further, he and police were able to recognize the woman as his granddaughter.

While it turned out that no crimes were committed in this case, Hoebeke and police from other cities and towns say they have received reports of criminal acts involving campaign signs being stolen or damaged.

In a post on the department’s Facebook page, Hollis police issued a reminder “that regardless of your political affiliation, stealing a sign, which is the property of someone other than you, is a crime, which can and will be prosecuted.”
