Prescription drug take back day set for Saturday; all Greater Nashua towns participating

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Reporter | Oct 22, 2020

Collection sites will be set up in cities and towns across the nation, including in Nashua and surrounding communities, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

In New Hampshire, U.S. Attorney Scott W. Murray issued a statement this week encouraging Granite Staters to participate in what he called “an important effort to rid homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs.”

Collection site locations for Nashua area communities are listed below.

All sites will adhere to local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations in order to maintain the safety of all participants and local law enforcement,” Murray said in the statement.

He said the drop-off service “is free and anonymous … no questions asked.”

Murray said law enforcement personnel will be stationed at each site to collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of medication.

Vape pens and other e-cigarette devices will be accepted, as long as the batteries are removed.

Liquids, including intravenous solutions, syringes and other sharps, and illegal drugs will not be accepted.

Participation in drug take back days, Murray said, is “one of the simplest ways that all Granite Staters can help to combat the opioid crisis is to ensure that unwanted medications do not fall into the wrong hands,” he said in the statement.

“Far too many people started on the path to addiction by misusing prescription drugs. During the pandemic, individuals spending time at home may be tempted to misuse medication that they find in their medicine cabinets.

“I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to dispose of any prescription drugs that they no longer need in order to help protect their families and their communities.”
