NASHUA – The installation of 49 solar panels atop the century-old Nashua PAL headquarters on Ash Street marks a major milestone for the organization’s ongoing, sweeping renovation project that got underway last year.

Representatives of ReVision Energy, an employee-owned solar energy firm that sells and installs residential and commercial solar-power systems and other renewable energy applications, were on hand for the final inspection process, completed late last week, according to Dan Weeks, a ReVision director and employee-owner from Nashua.

“We are thrilled to help make Nashua PAL’s dream of a solar-powered future a reality, and we’re grateful to the City of Nashua for leading the way in bringing cost-saving solar to our public schools and buildings,” Weeks said Friday as the inspection process wrapped up.

The project’s completion marks another step forward in Nashua PAL’s comprehensive renovation project, which is being coordinated by the nonprofit Building On Hope.

According to Weeks, the 16-kilowatt solar energy system is expected to save Nashua PAL more than $100,000 in electricity costs over the panels’ 25-year warranty period.

It is also estimated to offset nearly 20,000 pounds of carbon pollution per year, Weeks added.

He said the project is part of ReVision’s “mission to help schools and community centers across the region harness the sun to save money and help save the environment for our kids.”

Nashua PAL, founded about 30 years ago, is an affiliate of the national Police Athletic League movement, created by police departments to offer children and youths, mainly those from economically disadvantaged families, athletic and other programs to help them succeed in school, stay clear of drugs and other criminal activity, and strengthen police-community relations.

Nashua PAL moved into its Community Center and Youth Safe Haven headquarters at 52 Ash St. not long after its founding, and has since been raising funds and seeking grants to renovate the structure.

The building previously served as three different churches, mainly the former Church of the Annunciation, a Greek-orthodox parish that in the early 1970s merged with St. Nicholas Church, the city’s other Greek parish, into today’s St. Philip Church.

Nashua PAL executive director Shaun Nelson said in a statement that the solar installation project is an ideal component to its ongoing renovations.

“When solar became a reality for us, it was a great synergy with the renovation project we have going,” she wrote.

“The concept of adding a component to the physical building where our kids come in every day, where they can be reminded that they’re part of this bigger picture, lines up with everything we’re trying to teach them.”
