Spenga gym reimagines a workout

By George Pelletier - Milford Bureau Chief | Aug 15, 2020

NASHUA – Spenga, 493 Amherst St, is a distinctly different gym that focuses on combining “spin, strength, yoga” into one comprehensive workout.

Owner Tracy Bastarache said the adjustment during the pandemic was difficult, but said in general, things are going well.

“We were officially closed down for three months,” she said. “But once we reopened, our members were so excited to come back. They were so happy to get back to their routine and we were equally happy to see how happy they were to have their workout back.”

As Spenga has a smaller space, Bastarache said they had to get creative to adhere to proper social distancing protocols.

“We have to be a minimum of eight feet apart,” she explained. “It did make us think outside the box a little bit with our stations and stuff. It’s not perfect, but we are able to get 17 members in right now.”

When people came back, a big selling point was just how clean and sanitary the gym is, which is a popular and favorite trait of all Spenga gyms.

“My husband Drew and I are kind of clean freaks ourselves,” she said. “We’ve always had very stringent cleaning protocols. We never ask our members to do any cleaning of equipment. So, we know it’s done right because we train our staff.

To take it to the next level of clean, Bastarache said they bought an electro-static sprayer, which sanitizes the equipment and surfaces with a hospital-grade disinfectant, which is specifically designed for this type of machine.

“With the spacing, the distancing and knowing how clean we’ve always been, people are very comfortable coming back to our studio.”

Spenga ordered the electro-static sprayer in March, but didn’t receive it until the beginning of July.

“There was definitely a high demand for it,” Bastarache said.

The summer has been busy for Spenga, as Bastarache believes that many people who were without their workout for so long were just itching to get back.

“Our classes have been pretty full,” she said. “We have a new general manager, Alyssa O’Meara, and we’re so lucky to have her on board. She wanted to do some outreach and business-to-business events and since having yoga and brews is often a big thing, we thought we’d put our spin on it.”

No pun intended.

Bastarache said one of their instructors gets together with friends on Sunday after workouts, and that idea bred a new Spenga program.

“They call it Detox-Retox, which is such a great name,” she said. “The first brewery that we’ll be going to is Odd Fellows, 124 Main St., Nashua, this Sunday, August 16. The outdoor workout will be at French Park downtown.”

The gist is that after a tough workout, what could be better than a cold brew.

“People can register at EventBrite,” Bastarache said. “The fee is $15, and that covers their workout with one of our certified instructors. It’s not just yoga, it will be a strength workout as well with some yoga pieces built in. And that fee also includes their first beer at the brewery.”

Sunday, August 23’s Detox-Retox will be at Liquid Therapy, 14 Court St., Nashua, next door to the Nashua Public Library.
