‘Executive chef’ of hot dogs, John Sullivan, brings Pat’s World Famous hot dogs to Nashua in time for summer

NASHUA – As folks begin stepping outside, making sure, of course, that proper precautions such as masks and social-distancing practices are in place, a welcome sight will greet those who make their way over to Greeley Park: A shiny, new hot dog cart manned by a career executive chef.

John Sullivan, known for several culinary-related pursuits in the area, including the Yankee Chef, the former Milford restaurant that recently evolved into Yankee Chef Custom Catering, said the idea came to him over the winter.

“I finally convinced myself to buy a hot dog cart … then I thought of this spot,” Sullivan said, referring to Nashua’s historic recreation spot on land once farmed by members of the Greeley family.

Sullivan, with 40-plus years of professional culinary experience under his belt, is eager to hand out his newest business card, which identifies him as “executive chef” of the new Nashua location of Pat’s World Famous hot dogs, a spinoff of the original Pat’s World Famous that has fed Hampton Beach visitors since 1982.

That spot, on D Street, is operated by Sullivan’s son, Patrick Sullivan, who came up with his father’s “executive chef” title.

For now, at least, some of the specialty hot dogs that put the “world famous” in the name aren’t available in the new Nashua location, but the standard hot-dog condiments are all there for those who like to decorate their original “basic dog.”

For several years, Greeley Park visitors, and plenty of drive-by customers, got their hot dogs from Jean Carbone, known informally as “the hot dog lady” and more formally as the owner of Jean’s Express Dogs.

Carbone recently moved on, creating something of a need that Sullivan, who turns 67 next week, said he’s pleased to fill.

Having just opened this weekend, he said he’s not sure if he’ll modify his hours, which right now are 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
