No decision on opening city swimming pools

By Staff | May 24, 2020

NASHUA – Now that warmer days have arrived, people will soon be seeking ways to cool off and beat the heat.

The may not though be able to do that at the city swimming, pool, though as a final decision on whether to open for the season has yet to be made.

“We’re discussing it now, and I’m not sure when the decision will be made, but it will have to be soon because we need to start letting people know what the plan is going forward,” Public Relations Administrator with the Division of Public Works Lauren Byers said.

She believes that as with most things going on right now, multiple people will be weighing in on this decision, such as public health, the Division of Public Works and the mayor’s office. Byers said that just looking at the guidelines from the state, she believes it would be difficult to open the pools, but that officials are taking everything into consideration.

“Basically, with the pools, we’re not concerned about the water itself right now,” Byers said. “It’s more an issue of having all of those children in a very small, confined area.”

Aside from the swimming pools, the city also has splash pads, and Byers was not sure if the decision would include those as well. However, she said if the pools do close, then those splash pads may experience large crowds.

City officials in Manchester made the decision this week to not open swimming pools this summer.
