NASHUA – Police officers who responded Saturday evening to a “give assistance” call for a woman who needed help opening her electronic safe to access her prescription medications ended up dealing with a very different set of circumstances, according to police reports.

Upon arriving at the residence, 76 Farmwood Drive, the officers began speaking with the resident, identified as Dusty Lyn Brenner, 48, when they noticed “small, white pills” on the floor – within “direct reach” of a 3-year-old boy, police said.

Moments later, according to police reports, the boy left the room and headed for a bedroom, with Brenner following him. An officer also followed, and upon reaching the bedroom found the boy playing with toys, allegedly in the midst of more small, white pills that police said were “scattered all over the floor.”

As the officers questioned Brenner about the pills, according to police reports, she turned her back on them, appeared to pick something up off a table, and when she turned back around, she allegedly had a steak knife in her hand.

Police said Brenner pointed the knife at one of the officers and allegedly took a step toward him, at which point the officer yelled “drop it,” the reports state.

The officer then tackled Brenner, and pinned her to a reclining chair while attempting to disarm her, police said.

The officer succeeded in taking the knife from Brenner, but sustained a cut to his left ring finger in the process. Police said the cut was minor in nature.

As the officers attempted to arrest Brenner, she allegedly resisted by pulling her arms away from them, but she was eventually taken into custody.

Transported to police headquarters, Brenner agreed to a post-arrest interview, and told police the pills were Methadone, for which she had a prescription and had gotten it filled a day earlier.

Brenner told police the boy had “gained access to the bottle and opened it, spilling (the pills) on the floor,” the report states, but “she did not pick them up despite” the fact the boy was there.

Detectives called in to further the investigation charged Brenner with one count each of second-degree assault and criminal threatening, both Class B felonies, along with one count of endangering the welfare of a child and two counts of resisting arrest or detention, all Class A misdemeanors.

Brenner was arraigned Monday in Superior Court, and at a subsequent bail hearing was ordered held on preventive detention.

Police said detectives contacted a representative of the state Division for Children, Youth and Families, who took custody of the boy. He was not injured in the incident, police added.

Police ask that anyone with any additional information on the incident contact the department on its Crime Line at 589-1655.
