Salvation Army opens food pantry

Nashua Salvation Army, 1 Montgomery Ave., Nashua

NASHUA – Food donations to the Nashua Salvation Army have so far kept up with the sharp increase in need over the past week, but supplies of certain items are starting to show signs of dwindling, development director Aime Groff said Monday.

Thanks to continued donations to the food pantry by regular donors like Crosby Bakery, BJ’s and Whole Foods, and the delivery on Monday of a large quantity of produce from Costco, the agency has been able to offer both prepared meals and to-go groceries every day, Groff said.

The Salvation Army also receives food assistance through Southern New Hampshire Services, a designated Community Action Agency that provides a range of social services to Hillsborough and Rockingham counties.

According to its website, SNHS has suspended in-person meetings with clients and visitors at its resource centers and offices, but clients can receive assistance via phone by calling 668-8010.

Similarly, the COVID-19 threat has forced the Salvation Army to suspend its senior and children’s programs, leaving only the food pantry operational.

It has also shortened its hours to 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday.

On Sundays, Groff said, its church services are conducted live via Facebook.

As for food deliveries, staff and volunteers will make every effort to continue delivering to homebound clients, Groff said. Anyone able to volunteer can contact her at 889-5151.

The supplies that are beginning to run low include peanut butter, cereal, macaroni and cheese, and canned tuna fish and chicken, Groff said, adding that donations of those items in particular are welcome.
