Comcast offers unlimited internet access during COVID-19 outbreak

NASHUA – As the state slows and retreats into self-quarantine, Comcast has boldly sped up and increased its public access after realizing internet service cannot come down with a case of COVID-19.

With concerns of accessibility for remote education, businesses and media updates, the company announced on Friday new policies tailored to the pandemic offering, “new families who connect … 60 days of internet service for free,” according to their website, and increased speeds from “15/2 MBPS to 25/3 for all new and existing customers, and will become the speed of the service going forward,” effective Monday.

In addition, Comcast will send a free self-instal kit that includes a cable modem with a Wi-Fi router to all new customers with no shipping fee, no term contract and no credit check.

Dave Watson, Comcast CEO, released a statement saying: “During this extraordinary time, it is vital that as many Americans as possible stay connected to the internet – for education, work and personal health reasons. … Our employees also live and work in virtually every community we serve, and we all share the same belief that it’s our company’s responsibility to step up and help out.”

As Nashua’s primary service provider and with 9.9% of the city’s population in poverty, according to the 2019 census (that’s almost one out of every 10 people), Comcast’s new policies will make a massive impact on nearly all residents.

In conjunction with the release of the 60-day free, in-home Wi-fi, Comcast also is opening every Xfinity hotspot up to free and public usage.

Furthermore, if you are a current Comcast/ Xfinity data subscriber, during this 60 day period, no matter what you pay for, you now have unlimited data, no risks of disconnections or late fees for internet service, Comcast officials said.

“We’re happy to offer 60 days of free service, but we’ll continue to evaluate the situation as it unfolds,” said Marc Goodman, a member of the Boston area Comcast team.
