Local residents say final goodbye to Capt. Ryan Phaneuf

By ROBERT WALRATH - Milford Bureau Chief | Mar 1, 2020

HUDSON — Noble, selfless and dedicated were just three of the words used by mourners entering St. Kathryn Church in Hudson Saturday to describe U.S. Air Force Capt. Ryan Phaneuf.

Phaneuf, who was born in Nashua but raised in Hudson, perished in a crash on Jan. 27 while co-piloting a surveillance aircraft is the Ghazni Province of Afghanistan. Lt. Col. Paul K. Voss, of Yigo, Guam, also died in the Bombardier E-11A mishap, which was running support for Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

More than a hundred people — including friends, family and members of the military — gathered at the funeral mass of the Alvirne High School graduate, who assigned to the 37th Bomb Squadron at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota.

Following the service, Phaneuf body was escorted from the church to the funeral home, led by the Hudson Fire and Police department. He will receive full military honors in a private burial at Arlington National Cemetery on March 9.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Air Warrior Courage Foundation. To make a donation, go to www.AirWarriorCourage.org

Gov. Chris Sununu directed that all flags in the Granite State be flown at half-staff on Saturday, in memory of Phaneuf.
