Candidates scramble to gain votes

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Writer | Feb 11, 2020

Democratic primary hopeful Amy Klobuchar addressed the Rotary Club of Nashua Monday noontime, and a couple of hours later Bernie Sanders stood on a loading dock at the rear of his Greater Nashua headquarters in Hudson to fire up a legion of supporters ready to canvass for votes on the eve of the 2020 New Hampshire first-in-the-nation presidential primary.

Meanwhile, surging candidate Pete Buttigieg hosted an evening get-out-the-vote rally at Milford’s Hampshire Hills Athletic Club, and former Vice President Joe Biden, whose support has been waning in recent days, gathered with voters in Gilford before heading to a get-out-the-vote rally in Manchester.

Elizabeth Warren, from neighboring Massachusetts, was in Portsmouth Monday evening, hosting a town hall at the historic South Church on State Street.

Among the longshots, Michael Bennet spent Monday in New Hampshire’s North Country and later, in the Upper Valley region, meeting with voters in Dixville Notch – where voters cast their ballots at midnight – then traveling to New London and Claremont before speaking at a New Hampshire Young Democrats first-in-the-nation-eve program.

Tulsi Gabbard and Andrew Yang were both in Manchester Monday evening for town-hall events.

According to the latest CNN/University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll released Monday, Sanders continued to lead the pack, with 29 %of likely Democratic primary voters in his corner.

Buttigieg was running a solid second with 22%, while Biden was clinging to third place with 11% with Warren right behind him with 10%.

Klobuchar, whose numbers rose over the weekend, was at 7%, while Gabbard was at 5%.

As for Sanders, he and his wife, Jane, who accompanied him at the Hudson rally, headed for the University of New Hampshire for what he titled “Bernie Beats Trump GOTV Concert Rally,” featuring guests including U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Dr. Cornel West and Cynthia Nixon, as well as special musical guests, the rock bands The Strokes and Sunflower Bean.
