HUDSON – Some onlookers who happened to be in the area offered assistance to first responders when a vehicle veered off a roadway, rolling over and entering a frozen pond on Sunday.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Hudson police and fire officials responded to the area of 315 Derry St. for a two-car accident, which resulted in officials locating a 2017 Ford Fiesta getting flipped upside down in a pond along the northbound lane of Derry Street upon arrival. Responders also saw a 2016 Honda CRV in the southbound breakdown lane of Derry Street featuring significant rear-end damage.

Officials said the Ford was driven by Alexander Picard, 24, of Hudson and the Honda was driven by Chris Columbus, 51, of Litchfield. Officers conducted an investigation and were able to determine that Columbus was traveling south on Derry Street. Officers also determined Picard was also traveling south on Derry Street behind Columbus.

Officers believe Picard caught up to Columbus’ vehicle and collided with his Honda. This collision caused Picard to careen in his Ford across the northbound lane of Derry Street, down an embankment and rollover into a frozen pond.

Another man who witnessed the accident helped first responders in their rescue of Picard.

Both drivers involved in the accident endured minor injuries. Columbus was not transported to the hospital for his minor injuries, but Picard was.

Picard was also arrested on-scene and charged with DWI drugs. Picard was released on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned at the Ninth Circuit Court in Nashua on March 13.
