Merrimack woman arrested for habitual offender, other charges

By Dean Shalhoup - Senior Staff Writer | Jan 4, 2020

NASHUA – Roughly three months after she was charged with driving as a habitual offender and other traffic-related offenses, Merrimack resident Barbara Callahan was back in court Thursday, the result of her latest arrest in December on a similar set of alleged offenses.

Callahan, 54, of 6 Joppa Road, was still out on bail from her Sept. 24 arrest when she was taken into custody in mid-December, according to police. The September charges include one count each of operating as a habitual offender; operating after suspension, subsequent offense; operating with a suspended registration; and on an electronic bench warrant issued out of Nashua district court.

The charges stemming from Callahan’s December arrest include one count each of operating as a habitual offender, Class B felony; and operating after suspension, subsequent offense; resisting arrest, breach of bail, and two counts of disobeying an officer, all Class A misdemeanors.

Police said Callahan has been certified as a habitual offender since June 5, the same day her license was suspended upon her arrest for driving while under the influence.

The series of events that led to Callahan’s December arrest began when an officer on patrol on Continental Boulevard recognized the driver of a passing car as Callahan, whom the officer knew to be a habitual offender, police said.

When the officer caught up to the vehicle and attempted to stop it, the vehicle, allegedly driven by Callahan, pulled into the Gulf gas station “at a high rate of speed (and) stopped abruptly behind a vehicle parked at the gas pumps,” the report states.

Callahan allegedly “quickly exited the vehicle and began to walk at a fast pace around the side of the building,” the officer stated.

The officer “advised Barbara to stop multiple times,” the report states, but Callahan allegedly told the officer she “was not driving and was not going to get back into her vehicle.”

She eventually returned to the car, at which point she was taken into custody, the report states.

Callahan’s next scheduled court date wasn’t immediately available.
