Downed trees lead to power outages

By ADAM URQUHART - Staff Writer | Nov 2, 2019

NASHUA – Jean Paul was eating breakfast when a loud noise echoed just outside her Nottingham Drive on Friday morning.

A large tree at the edge of her neighbor’s yard came crashing down as a result of strong winds, falling right across her driveway, meaning her vehicle was trapped inside her garage. She said the only way she can access the property is to walk around the tree’s massive root system at the edge of the neighbor’s yard.

“I heard this huge, loud noise and I thought I better get up and see what that is, and I kind of thought it might be a tree on the house, but it wasn’t,” Paul said. “It was a tree on my yard.”

This is not the first time she has dealt with issues from fallen trees. In 2017, she was getting ready to go to a funeral when a tree fell and destroyed her car. However, with this most recent incident, she and her neighbors were left without power, along with thousands more across New Hampshire because of the windstorm.

Eversource Energy spokeswoman Kaitlyn Woods said officials responded to a power outage in the area of Nottingham Drive in Nashua at approximately 10 a.m. Friday. Since that time, she said the energy company got a line and tree crew to the site to restore power.

“A large tree brought down power lines and service wires, causing an outage impacting 76 of our customers,” Woods said in an email.

She said Eversource expected to restore all power by this morning.

“I’d say this is called a Halloween trick, and I’m ready for a treat,” Paul said.

As noon Friday, approximately 25,000 Eversource customers were without power as a result of wind gusts reaching more than 40 mph. Strong winds downed trees and wires through the night in various parts of the state, causing scattered power outages, particularly in the western and northern parts of New Hampshire. However, crews restored power to more than 52,000 customers who were impacted by the windstorm on Thursday night, and continued working Friday.

“We proactively positioned our workers and additional contract crews throughout the state in advance of the storm, which enabled us to make good progress through the night,” Eversource New Hampshire Vice President of Electric Operations Joe Purington said. “Our team will work around the clock until all our customers have power.”

Moreover, Eversource cautions all customers to stay far away from any downed wires and to report them to 911.
