Standoff suspect surrenders after 11 hours

By Mathew Plamondon - Staff Writer | Oct 27, 2019

NASHUA – An 11-hour standoff that featured tear gas, a SWAT team and multiple streets closed ended very late Friday when Shawn Goodine, 43, of 148.5 Chestnut St., finally surrendered.

According to Nashua police, officers responded to the residence for a report of a domestic dispute at 12:30 p.m. Friday. At the time, members of the Uniform Field Operations Bureau found themselves unable to detain the suspect when they went to serve a warrant for a Class A misdemeanor charge of domestic violence, criminal threatening. Authorities received information that Goodine was in possession of a firearm, causing the severity of the situation to heighten.

Throughout the evening and into the night, officers worked with Nashua Fire Rescue and local utility officials to shut off the natural gas and electricity to the house, in addition to securing the perimeter of the area. This led to multiple streets in the surrounding neighborhood to be shut down completely.

As the standoff continued, police and officials at Elm Street Middle School worked to divert the traffic and buses transporting students home after classes dismissed. Walkers were kept at the school until their parents or legal guardians could arrive to get them.

The Nashua SWAT was eventually activated. Members could be seen firing tear gas into the building in an attempt to draw Goodine out of the residence.

Goodine ultimately surrendered. In addition to the domestic violence charges, he now also faces misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and criminal threatening. Each count carries a term of up to one year in prison.

Goodine refused bail and, as of late Saturday, was detained at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections. His arraignment is set for Monday in the Ninth Circuit Nashua District Court.
