New team at Amherst St. Elementary

By Grace Pecci - Staff Writer | Aug 20, 2019

NASHUA — A new administrative duo is in place at Amherst Street Elementary School, as new Principal Tom Adamakos and new Assistant Principal Nancy Maguire will greet students next week.

Adamakos is replacing former principal Jennifer Scarpati, while Maguire is replacing interim assistant principal Abby St. Pierre.

Though Adamakos may be new in his role as a principal in Nashua, he is no stranger to the city.

Adamakos was born and raised right in Nashua, making his way through Ledge Street Elementary School, Elm Street Middle School and the former Nashua Senior High School.

Adamakos received his bachelor’s degree in political science from Plymouth State University. He also holds a master’s in education from the former Notre Dame College of Manchester and an administrative certification from Rivier University.

He began his teaching career in Nashua in 1996 at age 32, as he taught eighth grade U.S. History at Elm Street Middle School.

Before this, he had worked as a district manager within the retail industry.

Adamakos said he got into the education field because he was “inspired by the people who inspired (him) as a younger person.”

Adamakos spent 10 years teaching at Elm Street Middle School before beginning a career within the Pelham School District. He spent more than five years at Pelham Middle School, serving as assistant principal and eight years at Pelham’s elementary school as principal.

“I’m very excited to be back in Nashua,” Adamakos said. “This is the city of my birth, my youth, my education, the start of my educational career. I have a lot of friends and colleagues here, some still teaching at Elm Street Middle School.”

Adamakos began his first official day in the office at Amherst Street Elementary School this past Friday.

“What I’m looking forward to is working and building relationships with people,” Adamakos said. “It’s a much smaller school from where I’m coming from. I’m looking forward to, hopefully, spending more time with students, staff and the community as opposed to being confined to paperwork.”

As he steps into his new role, Adamakos said he’s focusing on familiarizing himself with the district’s new Strategic Plan and how he can incorporate those steps into his new school. Adamakos said he will also spend more time getting to know the culture and the people of Amherst Street Elementary School.

He is also looking forward to getting to know Maguire better so they can work as a team to address the needs of the school.

“I’m excited and looking forward to this new opportunity. There’s going to be different challenges but it’s good to be back home,” Adamakos said.

School will be back in session on Aug. 26.
