Licensed to thrill: Exit 6 DMV visit a positive experience
So, what is the worst part about moving? Let’s start with packing belongings you know you will never use again. Fearful I’d want to look at my seventh grade report card as soon as arriving at the new house, I saved it, along with a rickety bird feeder and a dozen faded coffee cups from places that went out of business. I wonder if my HoJo’s cup from the long-gone Everett Turnpike Exit 5 days is worth anything.
But there is a worse aspect to moving: updating the address on your New Hampshire driver’s license. I may have gotten an ‘A’ for civics on my seventh grade report card, but real world civics kicks in when you step into the Division of Motor Vehicles. True, you can execute this basic transaction online, but c’mon, going to the registry is so much more entertaining. The fee to get an updated license with your new address costs $3. A small price for the fun you get to watch while waiting your turn.
Now a Nashua resident, I chose the modern-looking DMV office on Broad Street, just off Exit 6 from the Everett Turnpike. The day I drove in, I had to dodge 18-wheelers that were apparently going through road tests with DMV officers. I felt safe parking between two massive Chevy Denali trucks. Now to face the throngs inside.
What? No crowds? No flying chairs? The modern building that could have passed for a Friendly’s restaurant was clean, calm and not too busy. Sadly, they were not serving Fribbles. The greeter examined my paperwork and within 20 seconds, handed me a numbered ticket that put me in the queue for service.
In about 10 minutes, my number was called over the loudspeaker and I waltzed up to window No. 2 to get a revised license.
“I’ll take a pound of bologna,” I deadpanned as I handed the clerk my deli ticket. I thought I heard her mumble, “How would you like it sliced, sir?”
Within minutes I had a paper temp license and was on my way, never to return until 2022 when my permanent license expires. Wrong.
I was back the next day after receiving an email from Concord that my ez pass account had dipped to $5.29 and I was just a few toll trips away from turnpike bankruptcy. Luckily, there is an EZ pass office in the same Friendly’s DMV that I had just visited.
I wasn’t sure there was a problem, since two days earlier I updated my bank account info but still felt I should pop in to see why I was down to $5.29. And, I wondered which toll plaza did I visit that charged 29 cents?
After signing in on the ez pass iPad, I was called immediately and informed that there was now $32.29 and all the changes went through since getting my warning email. My DMV experiences were both positive. My only critique: I’d suggest making Fribbles and bologna sandwiches available in the future. Thank you.
