NASHUA – When detectives spoke briefly with Matthew Perry at police headquarters Sunday, shortly after officers arrested him on charges related to domestic violence, he denied all but one of the allegations, police stated in their reports.
“Matthew said he only slapped (the alleged victim) in the face,” police wrote, and allegedly did so because she was calling him a derogatory term for a gay man.
That alleged offense drew a charge of simple assault-domestic violence, a misdemeanor, one of five charges police filed against the 35-year-old Manchester man Sunday.
Perry entered not guilty charges and waived arraignment Monday. During a subsequent bail hearing, he was ordered held on preventive detention due to the judge finding that Perry, if released on personal recognizance bail, would likely pose a danger to himself or other people.
In addition to the simple assault charge, Perry faces one count each of criminal threatening-domestic violence, also a misdemeanor, and of second-degree assault-domestic violence, a felony.
The criminal threatening charge accuses Perry of telling the alleged victim, “When I come back later, I’m going to kill you,” as he walked out of the residence, police said.
Upon arresting Perry and running a check on his record, police also charged him on two outstanding arrest warrants – one originating in Hillsborough County Superior Court-North for allegedly failing to appear in court, and the other for alleged bail jumping, in connection with a drug case in the town of Raymond, their reports state.
Police said officers arrested Perry shortly after they were called to a residence in the city’s French Hill neighborhood Sunday morning for a report of a domestic altercation.
The alleged victim, described as a one-time intimate partner of Perry’s, told officers he strangled her and punched her in the face. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries that police said didn’t appear life-threatening.
In the meantime, officers located the suspect, later identified as Perry, “down the street” from the scene. While detaining him, the officers learned of the two active warrants and took him into custody.
Upon further investigation by members of the department’s Special Investigations Division, police charged Perry with the three domestic violence-related offenses, police said.
