NASHUA – A Massachusetts man faces one count of criminal mischief for allegedly spray-painting a swastika and the words “National Socialist Legion” on city property.
George Carty, 20, of Lowell, Massachusetts, was arrested Tuesday afternoon. Carty was previously charged in June with posting racist flyers and swastikas in a Westford, Massachusetts, neighborhood.
Police officers in a statement didn’t give the location of the Nashua property Carty allegedly damaged, nor did they specify whether it was a building, vehicle or some other type of property.
Carty was booked on the charge and later released on personal recognizance bail pending arraignment, which police said is scheduled for Feb. 22 in Nashua district court.
Police said they began the investigation that led to Carty’s arrest on June 13, when a detective with the department’s Special Investigations Division took a report regarding the painting of the symbol and words.
Roughly two weeks after the Nashua investigation began, Carty, then 19, was arrested by Westford police after a resident walked into police headquarters and told officers a man was driving around in the town’s Nabnasset neighborhood and hanging racist flyers on poles.
According to published reports, police stopped the car and identified the driver as Carty, who allegedly told them he “randomly chose to come to Westford” to post flyers warning of “white genocide” and advocating for “race purity,” according to a police report.
Police officials told the Lowell Sun they found numerous flyers in Carty’s vehicle, along with a stapling gun, spray paint, duct tape, “racist stickers” and a “manifesto” Carty allegedly wrote, and which contained “hateful speech.”
Carty, who was charged with two counts of tagging property and one count of minor in possession of alcohol – police allegedly found a bottle of whiskey in his vehicle – was released on personal recognizance bail, according to the Sun.
The current status of that case wasn’t immediately available.
As for the Nashua arrest, police ask anyone with information about the incident to contact the department’s Crime Line at 603-589-1665.
