Governor overcomes early deficit to earn second term

By Grace Pecci - Staff Writer | Nov 7, 2018

MANCHESTER – Gov. Chris Sununu, a Republican, will serve a second two-year term after fending off a challenge from Democratic candidate Molly Kelly in the Tuesday general election.

“We get stuff done – that’s what good public service is all about,” Sununu told supporters at his Election Night Celebration at the DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Downtown.

Sununu thanked his supporters.

“It’s about you guys. I can’t thank you enough,” Sununu told the crowd. “In good times and bad, always staying positive, always trying to engineer a better solution not just for ourselves, not just for the party, but for the state of New Hampshire.”

Sununu was sworn in as governor for a two-year term on Jan. 5, 2017. Previous to this, he was a member of the New Hampshire Executive Council from 2011-17.

Since serving as governor, Sununu has established full-day kindergarten throughout New Hampshire, looked into clear water projects and increased funds to fight the opioid crisis, among other things.

“At the end of the day it gives you a little bit of that 603 pride,” Sununu added Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Kelly addressed her supporters at Puritan Backroom in Manchester.

“We’ll continue to work hard to make New Hampshire a place where everyone has opportunity,” Kelly said.

“Even though we did come up short tonight, please don’t be discouraged,” Kelly told her supporters. “We can still make a difference each and everyone of us, every single day.”

Kelly promised she will continue fight for key issues such as the opioid crisis, making sure every child has a quality education, and enacting “common sense” gun laws and for women and their reproductive rights.

“We all know that state leadership is important, and important more than ever,” Kelly said.
