Judge OKs continuance of bail hearing for Merrimack woman

NASHUA – Ashley Compagna, the 34-year-old Merrimack woman who allegedly went on a recent crime spree that reportedly saw her steal a neighbor’s dog and try to break into an ice cream shop, had a court hearing Monday.

A Superior Court judge approved a request by Compagna’s attorney to continue her scheduled hearing for at least 30 days to allow Compagna to complete a residential substance abuse treatment program she entered late last week. Compagna is facing a series of felony and misdemeanor charges that stem from four separate arrests during the first week of September.

By coincidence, Compagna’s arrests began the day after a new state statute went into effect prohibiting judges,

prosecutors and bail commissioners from setting bail amounts beyond the means of defendants.

Known as the Criminal Justice Reform and Economic Fairness Act of 2018, the measure allows for personal recognizance bail in cases that don’t involve violence or a threat to public safety.

Thus the “revolving door” situation that developed for Compagna, which began with her release shortly after her first arrest early on Sept. 1.

Judge Jacalyn Colburn on Monday scheduled Compagna’s next court appearance, which is a dispositional hearing, for 9 a.m. Nov. 8.

Her charges are divided between three case files recently opened at Hillsborough County Superior Court-South. The first set – three counts of receiving stolen property and one count of burglary, felonies; and one count each of breach of bail and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors – stem from two arrests within hours the morning of Sept. 1.

She is accused first of stealing a neighbor’s purse, prescription medication and her German shepherd dog named “Cody.” Later that same morning, she allegedly tried to break into King Kone on Daniel Webster Highway, causing damage to the building, and violating her bail conditions set hours earlier.

Another file includes one count each of possession of a controlled drug and receiving stolen property, felonies, and another misdemeanor breach of bail charge, stemming from her arrest on Sept. 5.

The third file contains charges filed upon her Sept. 8 arrest, which include one count of possession of a controlled drug, a felony because of her previous felony conviction in Nashua in 2010; one count of theft, a felony that accuses her of stealing a bottle of perfume from a Merrimack store after having been twice convicted of felony charges; and one count of willful concealment for allegedly trying to steal a shirt from another Merrimack store.
