Local math teacher honored with National Education Award
Sankar
NASHUA – Srilakshmi Sankar, a math teacher and assistant principal at World Academy in Nashua, was honored by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in August with the Edyth May Sliffe Award for distinguished math teaching at the middle and high school levels.
This national education award recognizes Sankar for her outstanding work to spark students’ interest in math through participation in the MAA American Mathematics Competitions.
“The hours spent preparing students for and organizing MAA American Mathematics Competitions demonstrates her passion for helping the next generation understand the importance of mathematics in shaping our world,” MAA Executive Director Michael Pearson said.
“Sri Sankar is such a strong member of our teaching staff and mentor to our students here at World Academy,” World Academy Head of School Lisa Dias said. “We are so thrilled to see Sri recognized by MAA for her outstanding professionalism and excellent results in getting our students excited, engaged, and excelling in mathematics.”
The Edyth May Sliffe Award was established in 1989 with a bequest from Sliffe’s estate. A high school mathematics teacher in Emeryville, California for 36 years, Sliffe wanted to recognize the nation’s top math teachers for their contributions. Sliffe winners each get $500.
Annually, more than 300,000 middle school and high school students in approximately 6,000 schools participate in the competitions. The mission of the events is to increase interest in math and to develop problem-solving skills through participation.
The association is the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students, and enthusiasts. Learn more at www.maa.org.
