Arts grants help fund record number of local arts organizations
The Nashua Area Artists Association was one of 14 organizations who received funding from the Nashua Arts Commission, as the group completed its annual grant awards. The funds for the NAAA will be directed to the annual Greeley Park Art Show, pictured above.
NASHUA – A number of Nashua’s nonprofit arts organizations received checks in the mail to support their work when the Nashua Arts Commission recently completed its 20018-19 annual grant awards.
The grant program recognizes the contributions made by local 501(c)(3) nonprofit, arts-based organizations in good standing that have demonstrated a continued commitment to enriching the lives of area residents through visual arts and the performing arts.
Grants are awarded to organizations that show a commitment to community, education and quality of life through a consistent expenditure of their own funds to provide programs that benefit the Nashua community at large. The grants are designed to offset some of the organization’s costs of providing programs at little or no cost to the citizens of Nashua.
“We had a record number of applications this year,” said Arts Commissioner Mitzi Barrett, chair of the Grants Committee. “Although our funds are limited, we were pleased to make awards to all 14 organizations”
The organizations receiving the grants are Actorsingers for marketing support and performing at the Holiday Winter Stroll; City Arts Nashua to support Art Walk Nashua 2018, southern New Hampshire’s largest arts festival; Discover Dance for their work in the schools and the new Arlington Street Community Center; Great American Downtown for the Nu Muse Art and Music Festival; the Nashua Area Artists Association to support their annual Greeley Park Art Show, the Nashua Chamber Orchestra for their family concert; and the Nashua Choral Society for orchestration at their Beethoven concert.
Also receiving grants are the Nashua Community Concert Association for support of their 2018-19 season; Nashua Community Music School for their scholarship program; the Nashua International Sculpture Symposium Committee (City Arts Nashua as fiscal agent) for the 2018 Symposium; Nashua Theatre Guild for a sound system for Shakespeare in the (Greeley) Park as part of Summer Fun; Sinfonietta Strings (United Way as fiscal agent) for their in-school music program; Spartans Drum and Bugle Corps for community performances; and Symphony NH for their in-school music mentoring program.
The Nashua Arts Commission consists of volunteers appointed by the mayor that are charged to serve the community as Nashua’s resource to facilitate, advocate, coordinate and educate on behalf of the arts and cultural assets of the city of Nashua. The Nashua Arts Commission makes recommendations and proposes policies to the mayor and board of aldermen that support the ongoing efforts of arts organizations in the development of arts programs and projects in Nashua.
