NASHUA – A local man who lists his address as an apartment on Fossa Avenue is in jail on $10,000 cash or surety bail following his arraignment Tuesday on a felony robbery charge, which accuses him of sticking up a downtown convenience store Monday noontime.

Police said members of the department’s Problem Oriented Policing (POP) Unit arrested Luis Santos, 46, Monday afternoon as he exited the 4 Fossa Ave. building and began walking north on Main Street.

When he saw officers approaching, Santos allegedly “immediately turned around and began rapidly walking back towards Fossa Avenue,” police said.

The officers caught up to him and took him into custody without incident, police said, adding that cash in the amount of $60 was found on him while he was being booked at police headquarters.

If Santos makes bail, he is ordered to have no contact with Lake Street Convience, the store at 49 Lake St. he is accused of robbing, or its employees.

A Superior Court judge scheduled a dispositional hearing for April 12 in Hillsborough County Superior Court South.

Police said it was just before noon Monday when officers were called to Lake Street Convenience in response to a call reporting a robbery with a firearm.

They got a description of the suspect from the alleged victim and a witness, then viewed various surveillance videos through which they were eventually able to identify Santos, by comparing images and information they had on file from Santos’s arrest on a driving offense in 2014, police said.

A short time later, police said, a detective came upon a vehicle matching the description of Santos’s white Mitsubishi Lancer. Police said it was parked in Fields Grove with its engine running, and that a woman was sitting inside. She identified herself as Santos’s girlfriend, police said.

In interviews with police following the booking process, Santos allegedly said, “I did it,” then asked to call a lawyer, police said.

Sometime later, Santos asked to again speak with detectives, and was taken from his holding cell to an interview room.

After detectives again read Santos his rights, police said he “proceeded to provide full admissions to the armed robbery,” which was recorded on audio and video.

Santos “advised he (allegedly) committed the robbery to pay bills, and to provide for his family,” police said.
