Ledge Street School staff removal remains a mystery

By Hannah LaClaire - Staff Writer | Mar 14, 2018

NASHUA – The Nashua School District spent almost $100,000 between May and October on the two Ledge Street Elementary School principals who were removed from their positions last year, a full month before the end of school. No explanation has been offered by either party.

According to documents obtained by The Telegraph through a Right to Know Request in September, Janet Valeri, former principal, had been paid $25,397 from the end of May through to the end of

August.

In an additional Right to Know Request filed this month, documents showed that Valeri received an additional $48,537 gross payment at the end of September and another, smaller payment of just about $3,500 in October.

Dana O’Gara, director of human resources, said “this is what she was entitled to under the collective bargaining agreement.”

Tiffany Hyatt, assistant principal, was paid more than $19,000 between the end of May and the end of August. She did not receive any payments after that.

O’Gara also confirmed that Valeri and Hyatt are no longer employees of the Nashua School District.

Valeri and Hyatt left their jobs after an internal school investigation.

Initially, Connie Brown, then-superintendent, said the two administrators had been placed on leave.

In a statement from then-interim Assistant Superintendent Roland Boucher, “Principal Janet Valeri has retired from the Nashua Public Schools after 28 years of service. … Assistant Principal Tiffany Hyatt has moved on to pursue other opportunities.”

Valeri later rescinded her retirement and Hyatt rescinded her resignation. Both were still employees of the district for several months.

Valeri said via a phone call that she is not at liberty to discuss the matter.

Doris Hohensee, board member, said that as a personnel matter, the board also is not able to comment.

Superintendent Jahmal Mosley, who took over for Brown in July, said “all that was kicking up before I got there. … I can’t comment on the agreement, as I wasn’t part of any of it.”

However, he did say the district is trying to find a permanent principal to replace Valeri.

“The job is posted, and we are looking to find the right fit. I know the staff is looking forward to the future.”

Bruce Geer stepped in to initially serve as a special assistant to the superintendent and to lead the school.

Ana Vasconcelos was hired as assistant principal, and Tim McGillicuddy was hired Oct. 30 as interim principal.

Nashua Teachers Union President Adam Marcoux declined to comment.
