Fireworks to blame for early morning explosion in Nashua

By Staff | Dec 28, 2014

NASHUA – Police say an early morning explosion Saturday in a quiet neighborhood near Route 3 was the result of someone setting off fireworks.

According to police reports, officers responded at approximately 2:34 a.m. to 15 Vespa Lane for reports of a loud explosion and found the first of two parked vehicles damaged. Crews on scene evaluated some of the nearby residences and closed off a portion of the street for several hours after a secondary device, which had not yet detonated, was found on one of the vehicles.

The Nashua Police Department’s Hazardous Device Unit was activated as a precaution to assess the situation and found that the devices were similar to larger commercial fireworks. There are no leads on who may have set off the fireworks at this time.

Witnesses recall hearing a loud bang before looking out onto the roadway and noticing that there was damage to the windows of two vehicles.

No injuries were reported, and police say there does not appear to be any threat to public safety. Members of the Hazardous Device Unit safely disposed of the items, and the road later reopened.

Police are still investigating the incident and had not released any additional details as of Saturday night.

The homeowner, who requested anonymity after speaking with The Telegraph, said he does not know how the fireworks ended up on the vehicles. He called his neighborhood the kind of place where residents don’t even have to lock their car doors at night.

“It’s a great neighborhood, never had a problem before,” he said. “There was no one hurt, that’s the key thing.”
