New life coming to Coronis building in Nashua – but without that curved sign

By Staff | Oct 25, 2014

NASHUA – One of Nashua’s iconic downtown buildings will get a tenant after sitting partly empty for years, but as a result, the curved Coronis Cleaners sign will be moving.

Charron Medical Services, which has sold a variety of home medical equipment for more than 35 years, will move from the corner of Main and East Hollis streets into the former home of Coronis Cleaners, one block north at 222 Main St.

“We will rehab the space … and plan to move in sometime in the first quarter of next year,” said George Michael, owner of
Charron Medical Services.

Charron Medical plans to occupy the 4,200 square feet that was home to Coronis Cleaners for decades.

Coronis Cleaners was founded on Main Street in 1936, started by brothers Samuel and Harry Coronis. They built the current building in 1944.

The Coronis brothers sold the business in 2006 to True Blue Cleaners, which left the building several years ago. It has been empty since.

The building’s unusual curved front at the corner of Main and Eldgridge streets with its huge art deco “Coronis” sign has long been a landmark downtown.

Michael said he is talking to the Coronis family about the sign, and thinks they will take it for display or storage.

“It’d be a cool thing to hang in a barn, wouldn’t it?” Michael said.

The other half of the Coronis building, which houses State Farm Insurance, Bagel Alley and Mimosa Nail, will not change, Michael said.

“We have long-term leases with everybody, and are happy to keep things as they are,” he said.

Michael said Charron Medical is moving to consolidate its display and storage facilities, and to better showcase its products.

“It just gives us more space to show our wares,” he said.

“We’re doing a lot more work with home access, things like ramps, airlifts, and it’s hard to show off in our current space.”

Charron Medical has long been in rented space next door to the Giant of Siam restaurant on East Hollis Street, but that building will be torn down so the adjoining CVS Pharmacy can expand and have more parking.

Giant of Siam has moved to 90 Main St.

The Coronis sale was handled by Prolman Realty.
