Police investigating who left package at BAE systems that caused evacuation Monday
NASHUA – Police are trying to figure out who left a suspicious looking package at the BAE Systems facility on Spit Brook Road Monday afternoon causing a partial evacuation of the facility.
Police were called to the sprawling campus at 65 Spit Brook Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. when a package was found near a building referred to as North Wing B, police said.
The department’s Hazardous Devices Unit and Nashua Fire and Rescue personnel responded to the call and later determined no explosives were involved and there was never any danger to the public.
BAE spokeswoman Shannon Bettencourt confirmed the building was evacuated while police investigated. She said she could not talk about what type of work happens in the building.
The Spit Brook Road BAE facility serves as the company’s headquarters in New Hampshire and employs 1,300 people, Bettencourt said.
It isn’t known what type of package was found or by whom, or whether it was inside or outside the building.
Lt. E. Paulson, who heads the Nashua police Hazardous Devices Unit, wasn’t immediately available for questions but police said a felony investigation was underway.
BAE Systems employs about 4,600 people in southern New Hampshire at sites on Canal Street and Spit Brook Road in Nashua and facilities in Hudson, Merrimack and Lexington, Mass.
