AG still investigating May 4 Nashua shooting; second victim released from hospital

By Staff | May 18, 2014

NASHUA – The woman who was injured in a double shooting near Holman Stadium on May 2 that left a Hudson man dead has been released from the hospital, according to investigators.

Mireily Rodriguez-Torres,
32, was seriously injured when she was shot multiple times outside 14 Merrimack St. around 4:30 p.m. May 2 by an ex-boyfriend, Carlos Alago-Collazo, 34, of Nashua. Andres Garcia, 35, of Hudson, was killed, police said.

Court records show that Rodriguez-Torres reported Alago-Collazo to police at least once, but not since 2007.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeff Strelzin said last week that Rodriguez-Torres was released from the hospital and that the attorney general’s office is continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting and eventual suicide of Alago-Collazo.

Strelzin said there is no firm timeline for the release of a final report.

Nashua police swarmed the densely populated neighborhood between the Amherst Fire Station and Holman Stadium after the shooting was reported late on a Friday afternoon. They found Rodriguez-Torres and Garcia on the pavement in front of 14 Merrimack St. surrounded by pools of blood. Neighbors reported hearing four distinct “pops,” and police began searching for a white Honda Accord or Toyota Corrola.

Around 8:30 p.m. that day, police in Lawrence, Mass., used cellphone data to track Alago-Collazo and found him outside 696 Essex St. He was in his car, dead from an apparent suicide, police said.

About 10 hours after the shooting, Garcia was pronounced dead at a Boston hospital.

Alago-Collazo and Rodriguez-Torres had been involved in a long-term relationship and have two children together, according to police.

Records at Nashua district court show that Rodriguez-Torres obtained a restraining order against Alago-Collazo in October 2007, citing his “erratic behavior.” She told police Alago-Collazo suffered from depression and “at times can be aggressive,” according to court documents.

Alago-Collazo was charged with four counts of violation of a protective order and obstructing the report of crime or injury after calling and texting Rodriguez-Torres and then showing up at a baby shower she was attending. Alago-Collazo pleaded guilty to some of the charges and received a 90-day suspended jail sentence, according to court records.

Strelzin said he is waiting for final police reports from Nashua detectives as well as reports from medical examiners in Massachusetts. He said he will release a report on the entirety of the incident – potentially including the source of the gun used in the shooting – after receiving those reports.

Vilai Singhsri, who said he had lived in the Merrimack Street neighborhood for 20 years, said there are often disturbances and unruly people making noise and arguing in the area.

“It’s always trouble, one way or the other,” he said. “It’s a bad area.”
