Hazmat teams respond to Nashua High South after formaldehyde spill
Hazardous materials teams responded to Nashua High School South on Friday after a student dropped a small glass jar containing a stone crab specimen, spilling formaldehyde in the classroom.
Nashua Fire Rescue received the call just before noon and took “all necessary precautions” upon arriving on the scene, a statement said.
“The teacher removed the students from this and nearby classrooms and made appropriate notifications within NHS South,” the statement from Nashua Fire Rescue said.
Formaldehyde, a known carcinogen, is a compound commonly used to preserve specimens of animals and delays the decaying process.
After arriving at the school, hazardous materials crews entered the affected classroom and performed air-monitoring tests, which came back normal.
School officials contacted a certified cleanup contractor to dispose of the material. In addition, students were monitored by the school’s nurse to make sure no one experienced any medical issues, the release said.
Nashua Fire Rescue said no students or faculty members required medical attention.
