Ledge Street school locked down Friday after BB gun found behind building

By Staff | Apr 5, 2013

Ledge Street Elementary School went into lockdown Friday afternoon after a BB gun was found behind the Nashua school.

The lockdown lasted only a few minutes until police arrived and determined there was no threat. It delayed dismissal slightly.

Superintendent Mark Conrad said officials do not believe a student brought the weapon to school.

“This was the appropriate step to take until police investigated,” he said. “The police are now investigating how it got there.”

Conrad said “an individual” found the gun and reported it to school officials, prompting the lockdown. He said officials do not believe there was ever any threat to students or staff, and declined to say exactly where the weapon was located.

Conrad said if a police investigation reveals a student brought the weapon to school, the district will conduct an investigation of its own and take any disciplinary action necessary.

Under district policy, a student could face an out-of-school suspension or expulsion for bringing a weapon to school.

Conrad said the school planned to send out an automatic-alert phone call to all parents of Ledge Street students.

“That’s typically what we do if you go into lockdown for something more than a drill,” he said.
